This race of women use sexuality as a weapon. They hurl themselves out of their airlocks to be picked up by the Syreen ship and added to their complement, enabling the Penetrator to absorb more damage. Modeled loosely on the Sirens of ancient Greek mythology, as they sang to lure weary crew members to a watery doom, so the Syreens' song throws enemy crews of all races into a lustful frenzy. Stiletto? Why not a dart? Last but not least their secondary weapon is a hypnotisation field. Their ship also fires a "particle beam stiletto" at its enemies. Oh to include a ship that wouldn't have gone amiss in Flesh Gordon, the larfs the creators must have had. Many consider it one of the greatest computer games of all time. Genetically, the Syreen species is more closely relate to Humans than anyother. It was a milestone for early PC gaming and a huge influence on many modern sci-fi games such as Homeworld and the Mass Effect series. The Syreen are an alien race from the Star Control series. That's right, these women fly about the cosmos in a great big space dildo. Star Control II is a space adventure game that features role-playing elements alongside 2D combat and space exploration. Their original homeworld was destroyed when a Mycon Deep Child caused tectonic upheavals that irrevocably poisoned their atmosphere. And this, pictured, is their ship, the Syreen *Penetrator*. Star Control 2 The Syreen are bipedal humanoids, physiologically quite similar to humans from Earth. To put no finer point on it, this is a race of blue-skinned alien space vixens. Shofixti captains who are patient may find that their little gun can be quite effective when fighting slow, or short-ranged enemy vessels. But the game is just so damn good-from the tight plotting, to the wonderfully written and varied alien dialog, and especially the beyond-addicting two player melee combat with hilariously unbalanced ships. In the finest traditions of poorly-realised sci-fi, these essentialised qualities are emphasised to an absurd degree when gender enters the equation, as it does with the Alliance-affiliated Syreen. Only the humans, their experimental group, is worth their time and effort. Most suggest the Arilou, considering their vested interested in human development, and why they would abandon the Syreen and Androsynth despite how related everyone is. The Sun Device is located on Beta Brahe I (639.5 : 231.2), but it is guarded by a large (infinite, in fact) fleet of Mycon Podships. Rounds are fast and the ships are wildly varied. Travel to Beta Brahe I when the bulk of the Mycon fleet is gone. Star Control 2's combat is very difficult now because of interface issues (some ships require a level of precision very hard to achieve) but still a very fun game and the two player versus mode is also a lot of fun and a good pick up and play experience. Travel to the Mycon homeworld and tell them of the new planet to take the Deep Child. To view more information on each ship, position the cursor over the ship image. Get the Syreen ships out of the vault at Epsilon Camelopardalis Ia. And I admit to no small amount of personal bias here, as SC2 is one of my favorite games of all time. Control them starsįor the few Ars readers who might not have played Star Control 2 (or its later open source re-release, The Ur-Quan Masters), it might be difficult to see why I'm so effusive in praising a game that turns 26 years old next month. This race of traders is pretty much neutral, and does not align with any one side of the conflict, however they prove essential to your mission as they provide valuable assets in exchange for information. That pedigree is strongly represented in the game's form-in fact, Ford and Reiche even had the assistance of Starflight alum Greg Johnson in fleshing out aspects of SC2's design and dialog. Star Control II is the last-and many would say best-entry in the sorely missed Starflight-style space exploration/RPG genre that flourished in the 1980s and '90s. Star Control was a fun little Space Wars-alike, but it's the second game in the series that truly became famous.
